Volunteering at Cragside

We could not achieve the amount of work we do at Cragside without the help of our teams of volunteers. Working alongside staff, volunteers help us to meet and exceed ambitious targets. Volunteers are often the first point of contact that our visitors have, and the reception they receive from all members of the Cragside team is a major factor in the high levels of visitor satisfaction that we enjoy.

Whether assisting with the conservation of the collection, bringing Cragside’s story to life for visitors or maintaining our outdoor spaces, volunteers form an integral part of our property team. There are so many ways in which volunteers are involved, offering existing skills and learning new ones.

The Cragside Volunteer team is a very friendly and active one and there are several social occasions during the year. In the past couple of years, activities and outings have included a visit to the Lake District, a tour of Bowes Museum, a trip to Mellerstain and Floors Castle, a behind the scenes look at the house and our annual Post Season Meeting.

Key property facts:

  • Cragside has over 230 volunteers
  • Volunteers assist in no less than 10 departments across the property
  • In 2013, our volunteer teams contributed almost 23,000 hours
