Volunteering as a Room Guide

June 27, 2013

Join us at Cragside! As we enter the busiest months for a visitor attraction like Cragside, it seems an ideal time to draw attention to the huge contribution volunteers make to Cragside. I hope that I can tempt some of you dear readers into volunteering with us or a property more local for those of you further away.

As this blog is mostly focused on the House, I will tell you about the volunteer role which we literally could not open our doors to visitors without – the Room Guide.

A Room Guide is needed  for the security of the collection, safety of visitors and as a knowledgeable point of contact for visitors to ask questions of. The majority of the new volunteers who come to us as Room Guides have little prior knowledge of the history of Cragside, and I sometimes wonder if potential volunteers are put off from coming forward because they think that they don’t know enough about the history to be able to do it.

Panic not! We provide all our new recruits with lots of information, they shadow current volunteers until they feel comfortable with the type of questions asked and then when they do take a room on alone, they always have the back up of a book full of detailed information to reference when required.

If this sounds like something you may be interested in, we’d love to hear from you! Email our House Steward, Katherine Foggon on Katherine.foggon@nationaltrust.org.uk or call her on 01669 622002.

Also look out for a volunteer recruitment open evening in the near future. It will be an ideal opportunity for interested people to come along and have a chat without any pressure to see if the role is for them.
